More Advice. Less Certainty.

You have a decision to make. So you read another book. Listen to another podcast. Ask another person what they would do. Watch another video. Maybe even sign up for another course. None of this feels like avoidance. It feels responsible. You are gathering information. Preparing yourself. Making sure you get it right. Except eventually something strange happens. Instead of becoming clearer, you become less certain. There are now six different opinions in your head. Three possible strategies. Four reasons why every option could be the wrong one. And the decision you originally needed to make is still waiting.

Why This Matters

There is nothing wrong with seeking advice. Good information can save time, expose blind spots and improve decisions. But preparation has a destination: A decision. When preparation keeps producing more preparation, something else may be happening. You postpone the decision, but you also postpone the opportunity to prove to yourself that you can make one. Repeated often enough, that carries a hidden cost. You begin checking your judgement against everybody else’s. You hesitate over choices you once would have made. You stop asking “What do I think?” And start asking “Who can tell me what to do?” And the more often that happens, the less your own voice seems to count.

What’s Really Happening

The problem may no longer be that you lack information. You may already know enough. What you may not understand is why acting on what you know feels so difficult. A decision introduces uncertainty. You could get it wrong. Disappoint someone. Lose money. Be judged. Discover the choice did not work. So gathering more information can become strangely comforting. As long as you are still researching, you have not committed. You have not risked being wrong. And that can create the illusion of progress while quietly weakening something far more valuable: Self-trust.

The longer this continues, the cost rarely stays confined to one decision. Opportunities begin to feel riskier. Decisions take longer. You seek reassurance more often. Eventually, you can become someone who knows a great deal – but trusts themselves less and less. And here is what makes the pattern difficult to change: Patterns are often hardest to recognise when you are living inside them. You feel the hesitation, but you cannot always see the pattern creating it. You can be intelligent, experienced and highly capable and still repeat the same response because knowing what you do is not the same as understanding why you keep doing it. Until you recognise what is driving the hesitation, more advice can simply give the pattern somewhere else to hide.

The Doorway Back

Perhaps clarity is not something you must find before you move. Sometimes clarity appears because you move. There comes a point when another opinion stops helping. The doorway back begins with recognising the pattern beneath the hesitation rather than searching for another answer above it. Ask yourself: What do I already know that I am reluctant to trust? And if you keep arriving at the same hesitation, perhaps the next answer is not more information. Perhaps it is understanding what keeps pulling you back.

The One Deliberate Step

Choose one decision you have been postponing. For the next 24 hours, gather no more advice about it. Write down what you already know. Choose the next reasonable step. Then take it. Not because you can guarantee the outcome. Because every considered decision becomes evidence that you can choose, respond and handle what happens next. Your next chapter may not require another answer. It may begin with finally acting on one you already have.

Self-Reflection

  • Where am I still gathering information when I already know enough to decide?
  • What do I seek – clarity, certainty, reassurance or permission?
  • What has delaying this cost me – opportunity, momentum or self-trust?
  • What would I choose if I trusted myself with the outcome?
