The Fear of Being Seen
You know your subject. You have the experience. Yet when it’s time to record a video, publish a post, speak up or contact a potential client, you hesitate. Another take. More research. A better message. Reasonable explanations, but are they the real reasons? Sometimes what holds you back isn’t a lack of ability or preparation. It’s the fear of being judged. And unlike Halloween’s ghosts and ghouls, that fear can haunt your decisions all year round.
What’s Lurking Beneath the Surface
You’ve spent years building your expertise and reputation. Yet being visible can feel like putting your identity on trial. What if you’re criticised, ignored or seen as less capable? When visibility feels threatening, your Self-Preservation System (SPS) may steer you towards familiar protection: polishing, preparing and postponing. These behaviours look productive, but they can also keep you out of view. Not every delay is fear. Sometimes preparation is necessary. But when it repeatedly replaces participation, ask yourself: “Am I improving the work, or avoiding being judged?” The issue may not be your competence, but what you fear someone’s judgement would mean about you. Sometimes the scariest stories are the ones we tell ourselves.
The Stories That Haunt Us
Being judged is an experience. What you decide that judgement means about you is an interpretation. A disliked post or difficult question doesn’t erase your expertise. Yet notice how quickly your mind can turn disagreement into a threat:
- Fact: They have a different opinion.
- Filter: They think I’m incompetent.
- Forecast: Being visible will damage my reputation.
These are not the same thing. Your interpretation may be understandable, but that doesn’t make it accurate. Self-Recognition means noticing these patterns before they drive your decisions. Are you treating an opinion as a verdict on your worth? Has wanting respect become needing approval? You cannot control everyone’s perceptions, but you can change how much they influence your choices. The goal isn’t to dismiss useful feedback. It’s to distinguish feedback about your work from a judgement about your worth. Not every frightening thought deserves to be believed.
Step Out of the Shadows
When you catch yourself postponing a post, video or conversation, pause. Ask: “What am I afraid this might say about me?” Recognise the fear without judgement. Separate the Fact from the Filter and the Forecast: what happened, what meaning you’re adding and what outcome you’re imagining. Then choose your response deliberately. Prepare, but don’t wait for complete confidence. Sometimes confidence develops through action, not before it. You can feel nervous without letting fear decide. That’s Self-Mastery in practice.
Dare to Be Seen
This Halloween, the challenge isn’t to become someone else. It’s to notice where you’re hiding and choose differently. Ask yourself: Where am I holding back? Whose judgement am I afraid of? What story am I telling myself? What visible action could I take before I feel comfortable? Within the next 48 hours, take one action you’ve been postponing: share your expertise, record the video or contact that potential client. Keep it small enough to complete, but meaningful enough to challenge the pattern. Then measure success not by likes, enquiries or approval, but by this: Did fear make the decision, or did you? The purpose isn’t to control the response. It’s to practise choosing your actions consciously, even when you can’t control how others respond.
Self-Reflection
- Where am I holding back something worth sharing?
- Whose judgement do I fear most, and why?
- What am I telling myself might happen if I allow others to see me trying?
- What one visible action will I take despite discomfort?
