You Built It. Too Scared to Let Go?

Someone brings you a problem. Before they’ve finished explaining, you know the answer. You could talk them through it, but you’re busy. “Leave it with me,” you say. Another problem solved. Another responsibility reclaimed. And the familiar ghost whispers: They still need me.

Why This Matters

You’re the fastest fixer in the building. Customers trust you. Your team relies on you. Your ability to make decisions and get the job done helped build this business. Yet your diary belongs to everyone else. The work that could move the business forward waits until the interruptions stop. Even when you’re away, part of you stays on call. You want your team to take ownership. But every time you step in, you may be teaching them to wait for you. You built the business to give you freedom. Now you’re frightened to release the role that keeps you trapped.

What’s Really Happening

You know the delegation basics: clear outcomes, resources, boundaries and reviews. If those are in place and you still take over, notice what pulls you back: discomfort with a different approach, the urge to correct, the satisfaction of being needed. Here’s the ghost: your identity as the indispensable one. It helped you build the business. Now it may keep you from leading differently. Delegation becomes identity work when handing over responsibility feels like handing over your worth. If they can manage without you, who do you become?

The Doorway Back

Imagine a day when your team resolves problems without your intervention. You develop a relationship, improve a process or make a decision you’ve postponed for months. That day might feel strangely uncomfortable. Less urgent. Less reassuring. Let the feeling settle before you fill the space. You can value the person who built the business while growing into the leader it now needs. Your experience becomes the foundation for developing judgement, creating clarity and helping others take responsibility. The ghost loses its grip each time you discover you can be valuable without being indispensable.

One Deliberate Step

This week, choose one recurring responsibility someone else is equipped to own. Agree the outcome, their authority and a review point. When the urge to intervene appears, pause. Is there a genuine risk requiring your involvement, or is the familiar ghost asking to feel needed? Support them within the agreed boundaries. Give them room to think. Let go of one responsibility. Practise being valuable without taking it back.

Self-Reflection

  • What do I gain from taking responsibility back?
  • Who am I if my team doesn’t need me?
  • Does my team need support, or do I need to feel needed?
  • Who could I become if I stopped rescuing?

A Simple Way to Say Thank You

Because Meaningful Work Deserves a Moment of Gratitude

The work we do together here often reaches into very real moments of life – personal, professional and sometimes deeply human. Through these mindset memos, quiet breakthroughs, calibration calls, community coaching, and one-to-one or corporate work, clients often ask me how they can say thank you for the support and perspective they receive.

If something here has helped you feel clearer, steadier or more confident in your next step, the simplest way to show your appreciation is to buy me a coffee. It’s a small gesture, yet it genuinely means a great deal. More than anything, it lets me know the work is landing – and that’s what keeps this work a joy and not a job.
