Running on Empty

You may recognise this in your own life. I hear it often from the ambitious people I work with: wanting to give their best, yet finding that even a simple task feels harder than it should. You read the same email three times and still cannot decide what to do. You have handled harder challenges, so you tell yourself to concentrate and get on with it. But your attention is elsewhere: an unwell parent, a strained relationship, a legal dispute or someone you have lost. None of that stops when work begins. Your diary records your appointments, not everything you carry into them. Before you judge yourself, pause. The email may be simple. What you are carrying may not be.

Why This Matters

When you compare your current performance with what you usually manage, the gap can feel like a personal failing. You expect yourself to maintain your usual standards, even when your circumstances have changed significantly. In response, you work later, miss breaks and grow frustrated with yourself. By evening, there is little energy left for the people you care about. Rest becomes difficult too, because you feel you should be catching up. This creates a second layer of pressure:  alongside the original challenge, you are now managing the strain of judging yourself for how you respond to it.

What’s Really Happening

Capability and capacity are different. You can remain knowledgeable, ambitious and committed while having less time and energy available. Recognising this helps you prioritise, seek support and review commitments. If you are used to being dependable, asking for help or adjusting a promise can feel uncomfortable. But neglecting your own needs has consequences too. Self-mastery begins with recognising your circumstances honestly, including the limits you would rather overlook.

The Doorway Back

You can stay committed to your direction while adjusting what you ask of yourself now. Share a responsibility, review a deadline or seek support for something you have been carrying alone. Grief does not need to become a lesson. Your health deserves attention. Some pressures need practical or professional help, not just kinder self-talk. Make room for recovery before everything else is finished.

The One Deliberate Step

Before planning the week ahead, identify the pressure drawing most heavily on your energy. Then ask yourself “Which demand can I adjust to give myself more capacity to address this?” Choose one practical change and act on it. Delegate a  responsibility, renegotiate a deadline or arrange the support you need. Keep the scope manageable; recovery should not become another demanding project. Start with one deliberate adjustment that reflects your current circumstances. Commitment to your future and care for your wellbeing can sit alongside each other.

Self-Recognition

  • What am I carrying that my diary does not show?
  • Where am I expecting my usual output despite changed circumstances?
  • What do I believe asking for support would say about me?
  • Which commitment could I adjust to make room for what I need?

Your Words Make a Difference

This isn’t Just a Review. It’s Proof of Your Shift

This community has access to free coaching every Tuesday, and it’s something I feel genuinely privileged to offer. If you’ve found value in it, may I ask a small favour in return? A short review of your experience would mean a great deal – not just to me, but to someone quietly wondering whether to join us. Think back to where you were before we began: the uncertainty, the self-doubt. Someone else is there now, wondering if change is even possible.

When you share your coaching experience, you’re doing more than writing a review – you’re offering someone else a lifeline. Think back to where you were before we began: the uncertainty, the self-doubt. Someone else is there now, wondering if change is even possible.

Your success story could be the spark they need. Speak honestly about what shifted – confidence, clarity, productivity, or letting go of limiting beliefs. Share your wins, your favourite tools, what helped most. Your journey can inspire theirs. No need to be fancy – just be real. Your voice matters. Your review might be the reason someone takes that leap. Thank you in advance – your words truly make a difference.
